Temple of Hercules, Amman Citadel Bethany Layton 2011 |
Amman
Citadel, also known as Jabal al-Qal’a, is perched atop a hill overlooking the
city. There are many roman ruins on this
site including the remains of the Temple of Hercules and a Byzantine church. There is also a small, but informative museum
on site worth a stroll through.
Fees:
Entrance
is 2JD.
Tips:
- Take a small snack and sit on one of the benches and take in the modern bustling city below while surrounded by 2,000 year old architecture.
- Use this opportunity to take unparalleled panoramic pictures of the city. These are some of the best views you will get during your visit.
- The Raghadan Flagpole is an impressive 126.8 meter (416 feet) high unsupported flagpole supporting the Jordanian flag measuring 60x30 meters. From 2003-2008, the Raghadan Flagpole was the tallest free-standing flagpole in the world and held a Guinness World Record. You can see the flagpole from most anywhere in Amman, but it is particularly impressive from the Citadel.
- Look across the ravine and find the Roman Forum.
The Roman Forum, a 6,000 capacity amphitheater
built during the 2nd century, still stands today. You are able to climb the amphitheater stairs
and relax on the same seats in which people enjoyed entertainment two millennia
ago. Enjoy two small, but interesting
museums within the grounds.
Fees:
Entrance
is 1JD.
Tips:
- Find the keystone at the base of the stage and you can hear your voice project throughout the entire theater.
- Climb to the top of the theater and look out upon the city, you can also see the Amman Citadel from here.
- Avoid purchasing souvenirs and trinkets at the shops located directly outside the Forum. You will do much better to take a short walk across the grounds to the busy shop-lined streets. You will find equally beautiful souvenirs, but they will be of better quality and price.
